Mississippi Poetry Society's 2017 Poet of the Year

Reared in the Carrollton section of New Orleans before moving to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Elaine McDermott creates poetry that is a blending of the two cultures. She retired from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Jefferson Davis Campus.

Elaine McDermott was named Mississippi Poetry Society's 2017 Poet of the Year. In her new poetry collection, By the Rivers of Babylon, Elaine includes ballads, sonnets, light verse, and sophisticated lyrics. Scattered throughout her poems is an underlying theme of loss and longing for a particular person, time, or place.
